Analysis of zoobenthic communities in monitoring program for marine sand extraction

The coastal areas in Southern Sweden are threatened by an increasing coastal erosion. To mitigate the severe erosion of land, Ystad municipality executes sand extraction ca 7 km offshore to replace eroded beaches during 2011-2021. As a part of the ongoing monitoring measures, AquaBiota have analysed zoobenthic samples taken in the sand extraction areas as well as in reference areas.

Baltic tellin (Limecola balthica).

To ensure that the sand mining does not lead to large and unexpected impacts, 90 samples have been taken with a sediment corer. The samples were sieved and fauna identified with stereo microscope. A total of 15 taxa were found. AquaBiota was a subcontractor to Clinton Marine Survey AB.
