MMSS – Marine modelling in the counties of Stockholm and Sörmland

Maps describing the spatial distribution of benthic flora and fauna, and coastal and pelagic fish, has been developed within this project using spatial modeling.

All the modeling results presented in the reports (see below) are of good quality. In addition to species and species groups, HELCOM Underwater biotopes (HUB) have been modeled. Based on the species distribution maps, preliminary marine conservation values have been identified. Maps of several environmental variables have also been produced.

Species predictions can be used as a basis for both integrated and sectorial planning of the coastal environment and the archipelago. Predictions are also useful in the assessment of how common or representative a species or habitat is at different scales. This is of great importance when evaluating networks of marine protected areas such as Natura 2000, the HELCOM Baltic Sea Protected Areas and OSPAR Marine Protected Areas, and the overhaul of national nature conservation interests. With the help of softwares like Marxan, high resolution map data can be used for spatial planning.
