AquaBiota is specialized in developing decision support for water management and can be supportive in the decision process. We can participate in the entire decision making chain from planning, coordination of environmental monitoring or other tests, carrying out field investigations, analysing data, producing maps and other documents, processing the maps in planning simulations, presenting results and participating in the consultation process.
We can offer our expertise to develop and implement programmes for monitoring recipients in order to give a description and assessment of the ecological status and monitor its changes over time. We can also set up water plans and water programmes on behalf of several municipalities or regional cooperation.
Since the start AquaBiota has specialised in working with spatial basis data in GIS, which is useful for the planning of sea areas, lakes and rivers. This includes producing map data on the distribution of aquatic species and habitat, mapping of human activities and their effects. We use these data to describe and map conservation assets, ecosystem services, and as input for planning tools for the marine environment, such as Marxan with Zones. Analyses of such planning are made in close cooperation with the authorities and in consultation with stakeholders. So in other words, this is a practical part of spatial planning and it means that we can offer good expertise in assisting municipalities and other planning authorities. We also participate as experts in consultation meetings, planning, etc. We have conducted extensive marine mapping using spatial modelling in several coastal counties. Based on these maps, we have performed simulations planning using Marxan with Zones in Östergötland, and in Blekinge / Skåne. See the following pages for more information on spatial modelling, and marine spatial planning.
On several occasions we have acted as Project Manager and / or Project Administrator in collaborative projects with different governmental organizations. It is a role we happily take on, and we save the authority a lot of administration and time. The projects often require so many judgment calls and expertise that it is natural for AquaBiota to lead them. For example, the county council has been a partner in the regional modelling projects which AquaBiota has led. It was financed by the EU and / or the Swedish authorities. Please read more about our project management and administration.
According to the Government Bill 2013/14: 141 “A Swedish approach to biodiversity and ecosystem services,” ecosystem services has to be “integrated into economic considerations, political considerations, and other decisions in the community where this is relevant and reasonable” by 2018. Read more about how AquaBiota develops methods for quantifying ecosystem services. At present, strategic decisions can be made which will secure biodiversity as well as the environment’s ability to provide ecosystem services. To achieve this, AquaBiota can help with advice and expertise.
AquaBiota has also developed its own systems for quality and environmental management.
